Five chase True Tails in New Braunfels

Get tied on. Those might be the only instructions trainer Cole Norman needs to pass on to apprentice Cody Meche on Thursday night, when he rides True Tails for the first time in the $40,000 New Braunfels Stakes at Retama Park near San Antonio.

True Tails is arguably the quickest filly in the region, and she has used her speed to win stakes at Lone Star Park and Louisiana Downs. She is returning to her best surface, dirt, for the New Braunfels.

A six-furlong race for fillies and mares, the New Braunfels was set to go last Saturday night, but a lightning storm forced the cancellation of the second half of the card, and it was brought back for Thursday. The same field of six signed back up for the second take, including stakes winners Red Lifesaver, Expectant Diva, and Cookin's Cast.

All figure to be chasing True Tails, whose last dirt start resulted in a wire-to-wire win in the $48,000 Suthern Accent at Louisiana Downs on June 24. In that race, she ran the opening half-mile in 44.80 seconds and completed the six furlongs in 1:09.60.

Following that race, Norman worked True Tails on turf, was satisfied with the move, and sent her to the $250,000 Distaff Turf Sprint Championship at Calder Race Course on Aug. 5. She hooked another quality speedster, winner Unbridled Sidney, who ran the opening half-mile in 43 seconds.

True Tails sat in third early before finishing ninth in the race, the lone start in her career in which she has finished worse than third. For her return to dirt, she shows a pair of half-mile works at Louisiana Downs. True Tails will break from post 3 and will face a familiar rival in Red Lifesaver.

The two met in the $100,000 Valid Expectations in May, when Red Lifesaver closed from ninth in the slop for a neck win over True Tails. It was the biggest career win for Red Lifesaver, who in her last start was fourth in the $85,000 West Virginia Secretary Stakes at Mountaineer Park on Aug. 6. Red Lifesaver stalked the pace in that race, and she could get a similar trip from her outside post Thursday, tracking True Tails and the quick Silk Market.
