First-crop sire Jersey Town represented by his first winner


Cigar Mile winner Jersey Town was represented by his first winner when the 2-year-old filly Jay Wow won a $25,000 maiden-claiming race at Presque Isle Downs today.

Owned and trained by Wayne Rice, Jay Wow won the five-furlong race over four first-time starters by two lengths in the final time of :59.62. Jay Wow, the 8-5 favorite, was making her fourth start.

Out of Ima Soul Miss, by Perfect Soul, Jay Wow was bred by Charles Fipke, who bred and raced Jersey Town. Rice purchased by the filly for $2,500 at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October yearling sale.

Jersey Town, by Speightstown out of Jersey Girl, by Belong to Me, won six of 21 starts, with eight seconds and three thirds, while racing from ages 3 to 6. He earned $819,668 and won two stakes and placed in nine others.

Trained by Barclay Tagg, Jersey Town won the Grade 1, 2010 Cigar Mile over Haynesfield while recording a Beyer Speed Figure of 111. His other stakes win came in the Grade 2, one-mile Kelso Handicap in 2012, defeating Shackleford. In his last career start, he was fifth, beaten five lengths, in Tapizar’s Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile at Santa Anita.

Jersey Town has stood at Darby Dan Farm in Lexington, Ky., since the 2013 season for a fee of $10,000.

He has 40 juveniles in his first crop, and four starters so far, and 44 yearlings in his second crop.
