Finger Lakes track report

Classic Pack managed to set a stakes record, yet earned only a modest Beyer Speed Figure, in Monday's $248,400 New York Breeders Futurity at Finger Lakes.

Under Pablo Fragoso, Classic Pack romped by 9 1/4 lengths while covering the six furlongs in 1:09.85, breaking the record of 1:10.40 set by Mello Roll in 1997.

As an indication of how fast the track was playing on Labor Day, Classic Pack was awarded a 76 Beyer, 7 points lower than he earned for his maiden win at Belmont Park.

It was the fourth Futurity victory for trainer Ramon Hernandez, who won the race three times during a four-year span in the 1970's with the filly Vandy Sue (1976), Dedicated Rullah (1978), and Restrainer (1979).

* The 6-year-old gelding Atlantis Crusader ($3.10), ridden by Parker Buckley for trainer Anthony Ferraro, won for the fifth time in seven starts in a $6,250 claiming race Sunday. Coney Island Baby and Keepswooinshoes have also won five times at the meet.

* Jockey Michael Davila sustained two broken ribs when his mount, Trumpster, fell in the stretch of Monday's second race at Saratoga.

* Jockey Alfredo Hernandez will be out indefinitely with a neck injury after he was thrown from My Authority in last Sunday's fourth race.
