Socialsaul led a one-two finish for trainer Gary Contessa in Saturday's $150,000 New York Derby for New York-bred 3-year-olds at Finger Lakes.

In the process of scoring by 4 1/4 lengths, Socialsaul ($5.60) foiled his stablemate Preachintothedevil's chances of earning a $100,000 bonus for sweeping all three legs of the Big Apple Triple. Preachintothedevil had won the seven-furlong Mike Lee at Belmont Park on June 26. The series concludes with the Albany Stakes at Saratoga on Aug. 24.

It was the third straight win for Socialsaul since the gelded son of Read the Footnotes was stretched out following a fourth-place finish in his career debut going six furlongs. He is owned by Samotowka Stables. Socialsaul completed 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.09, giving local jockey John Grabowski his third New York Derby win since 2002.

Preachintothedevil, the even-money favorite, was 4 1/4 lengths clear of the third-place finisher, Sky Music, in a field of six.
