Finger Lakes: Rebound attempt for Sideways Glance

EmailSideways Glance, sharp in three consecutive starts during spring and early summer, will attempt to bounce back from a pair of subpar performances in the $50,000 Genesee Valley Breeders' Handicap at Finger Lakes.

The 1 1/16-mile race, restricted to New York-breds, drew a field of six.

Trained by the meet's leading trainer, Chris Englehart, the 5-year-old Sideways Glance won an allowance race against New York-breds and was twice second in overnight handicaps. In each of his last two starts, Sideways Glance flashed speed and tired badly.

Oddly, Sideways Glance gets a three-pound break in the weights from the 123-pound highweight, Brocco Valley, a horse he has already beaten twice this season.

Brocco Valley figures to set the pace in the Genesee Valley, but will likely face pressure from Sideways Glance and another early speedster, Mt. Majesty.

Now 6, Mt. Majesty is riding a three-race winning streak and comes off the fastest race of his career, an 88 Beyer earned in his first start off the claim for trainer Nirka Huertas. He was fourth in this race last year.

A hot pace might benefit Rises the Phoenix, who rallied to finish a head behind Brocco Valley last time out. Rises the Phoenix is only 1 for 16 the past two seasons, however, and 1 for 14 going a mile and 70 yards and 1 1/16 miles.
