Finger Lakes: Johnie Bye Night heads Baker pair

Johnie Bye Night and his coupled stablemate Brocco Valley form a potent one-two punch for trainer Charlton Baker in the $50,000 Wadsworth Memorial Handicap at Finger Lakes.

The 5-year-old Johnie Bye Night won the 2006 Wadsworth and finished second last year in what turned out to be the final career race of the famed gelding Funny Cide. As he has done each of the past two years, Johnie Bye Night will be stretching out to nine furlongs after winning the six-furlong George Barker.

Brocco Valley, 11 for 28 lifetime at Finger Lakes, also is in sharp form. He won his last race going a mile and 70 yards, with a career-best Beyer Figure of 93.

Despite his 5 for 7 record locally and his past success in this stakes, Johnie Bye Night is not the highweight. That distinction belongs to Malibu Moonshine, who has been assigned 125 pounds, two more than Johnie Bye Night.

Malibu Moonshine's form has soured since he won the nine-furlong Stymie over Aqueduct's inner track on March 1. His trainer, Gary Contessa, is 0 for 3 shipping into Finger Lakes for stakes the past five years.

The well-traveled 8-year-old Powerful Touch could be dangerous after beating a good field in the Jim McKay at Pimlico in mid-April, a race that produced three next-out winners.
