Finger Lakes: Freud’s Notebook in good form

Freud’s Notebook, who has run two sharp races since she was claimed for $25,000 in June, returns to the statebred ranks in the $50,000 Jack Betta Be Rite Handicap for New York-bred fillies and mares at Finger Lakes.

In her two starts since coming into the barn of Bruce Levine, the 5-year-old Freud’s Notebook missed by a head after setting the pace in a seven-furlong starter allowance at Parx and then dueled up front early and finished second in a second-level optional $32,000 claimer going a mile at Monmouth Park.

Earlier this season, Freud’s Notebook won back-to-back starts against statebreds going two turns over Aqueduct’s inner track, so she is well suited to handle the 1 1/16 miles of the Jack Betta Be Rite. In her only previous race at Finger Lakes, Freud’s Notebook was third in the 2010 New York Oaks.

The nine-horse field also includes stretch-out sprinter Lady On the Run, winner of the six-furlong Arctic Queen in July; and Color Blind, runner-up in the New York Oaks last time out.

Lady On the Run has been idle since a dull effort in the Aug. 1 Fleet Indian at Saratoga and has not raced around two turns on dirt since finishing second in a maiden race at Aqueduct in March 2011.

Color Blind challenges older fillies and mares after rallying to get second, beaten three-quarters of a length, in the New York Oaks on Aug. 25. Her only win on dirt did come going 1 1/16 miles at Belmont last October.
