Finger Lakes: Former local exercise rider Cook finishes second in Arabian race for amateurs

Jeannie Cook, a former exercise rider at Finger Lakes and daughter of retired jockey Robert Cook, finished second in a race for Arabians held last weekend at Newbury Racecourse in the United Kingdom.

The one-mile race for amateur female riders was part of an eight-race world-wide series for the 2013 HH Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies World Championship. The winners of each leg will advance to the finals in November in Abu Dhabi.

Cook, riding Hajes, finished 1 1/4 lengths behind Altesse Kossack, ridden by Marta Pisarek of Ireland, and a neck in front of the third-place horse Hareer.

Hajes led until deep stretch of the race, which was timed in 1:53.65.

“My horse did a very good job and he was always going well,” Cook said. “He was apparently beaten by a better horse.”
