Finger Lakes: Carlow surprise winner

Carlow, whose only previous win came against maidens at Suffolk Downs last November, rallied between horses in deep stretch to score an upset in the 25th running of the for New York-bred 3-year-old fillies at Finger Lakes.

In her only other start this season, Carlow ($15.60) had come from off the pace to finish second at 24-1 in a statebred first-level allowance at Belmont Park.

The six-furlong race set up for a closer after 2-1 favorite Bombay Dreams, Sweet Sweet Molly, and Champagne Ending battled head to head early. Champagne Ending won the pace battle, opening a clear lead entering the stretch, but Carlow finished fastest of all to score a three-quarter-length victory over another off-the-pace runner, Speed Bag. Champagne Ending settled for third.

Bombay Dreams tired to finish seventh.

Carlow, ridden by Joe Badamo for trainer Karl Grusmark, ran the distance on a fast track in 1:10.67.

* Keesler ($2.90) rallied strongly along the rail and drew off to a 1 1/2-length victory in the $50,000 Arctic Queen for New York-bred older fillies and mares.

Ridden by Parker Buckley for trainer Steve Asmussen, Keesler covered six furlongs in 1:10.66.

Perty Number, a 39-1 shot, came from far back to get second, a half-length in front of 18-1 Ava Marisa.
