Filly beats colts

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Mark Hennig shipped the filly Hemline to Monmouth Park for the opening-day feature, the Politely Stakes, only to settle for second place. In the $100,000 Jersey Derby, however, Hennig made his day at the shore a successful one, as his 3-year-old filly Mystic Lady ($5) raced wire-to-wire for a neck victory over Sir Brian's Sword.

The Jersey Derby was slated for the grass as a Grade 3 but was moved to the main track along with the day's other grass races.

Mystic Lady, the only filly in the race, completed 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.20 in her first race against colts.

"We were happy when this race came off the turf," said Hennig's assistant, Ellee Diamond. "It was the only way we were going to run."

According to Diamond, Mystic Lady will probably run at Belmont next, but a return trip here for the Breeders' Cup Monmouth Oaks is possible.

o Zonk ($4.40), trained by John C. Servis, overwhelmed a five-horse field in the $50,000 Revidere Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.
