Fillies look the fastest in sprint

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - A couple of sharp 2-year-old fillies could have the edge over four colts and geldings in the feature Sunday, a $50,000 optional race at 6 1/2 furlongs.

The fillies Vegas Folly and Proactive are each coming off a relatively easy win in which they earned identical 67 Beyer Figures, a number far superior than those earned by the other horses in the field.

Vegas Folly will likely be favored. She looked good beating $25,000 winners going 6 1/2 furlongs Oct. 27. She was right up on the pace and then drew away to a four-length decision over Lord Chivas. She was also an easy three-length winner over $20,000 maidens in her previous start. Frank Fuentes will ride Vegas Folly.

Proactive showed a lot of potential earlier in the year, but it took her eight starts before she put it all together. She started out at Bay Meadows where her best race was a third-place finish in the $69,000 Time to Leave Stakes June 15. She shipped up to Hastings to trainer Steve Bryant and was made the favorite in the CTHS Sales Stakes, but finished an even third to Searchin South.

After two disappointing efforts in stakes, Proactive was dropped into a $35,000 maiden race and she romped to a 4 3/4-length win over Camberley in a quick 1:18 for 6 1/2 furlongs Oct. 26. While it was a huge race, she never faced any pressure, and it will be interesting to see how she holds up with both Vegas Folly and Prerequisite breathing on her the whole way.
