The mutuel field, the 24th or “all others” option, is the 2-1 favorite after the first of three days of wagering into Pool 2 of the 2018 Kentucky Derby Future Wager. With $72,268 in the win pool and another $21,560 in exactas, the field is favored over individual interests Bolt d’Oro (5-1), Good Magic (8-1), Audible (11-1), and McKinzie (12-1). All wagering was suspended on Montauk (No. 15) just prior to the opening of Pool 2 at noon Eastern Friday when the colt’s connections informed track officials he has been declared from Derby consideration. Odds and will-pays are locked in only when the pool closes Sunday at 6 p.m. Eastern. That timing should be noted by bettors with an interest in Catholic Boy, the only one of the individual interests who will see racing action this weekend. Catholic Boy is the morning-line favorite today (post, 4:52 Eastern) at Tampa Bay Downs in the Sam F. Davis Stakes, the lone Derby qualifying points race to be run while Pool 2 is open. Catholic Boy was 16-1 after the first day of Pool 2 wagering. The field closed as the 6-5 favorite in Pool 1, which was held Nov. 23-26 in tandem with the Derby Sires Future Wager. Combined Pool 1 handle was $250,259, with another $42,953 bet in the Sires wager. This is the 20th year that Churchill has offered parimutuel futures, and the field has closed as the favorite every year in Pool 1 and during this time of year (now Pool 2).
