Field Commission scores upset

Field Commission ($46.90) sprung an upset in the $165,900 Vigil Stakes on Monday at Woodbine, scoring by 1 1/2 lengths over 56-1 outsider Dozen Dancer and 7-1 shot Timely Advice in the Grade 3 race.

The $2 exactor returned $1,301.40.

Shadowless and Disfunction dueled through fractions of 23.43 and 46.06 seconds in the seven-furlong sprint, as Field Commission raced in mid-pack in a three-wide position on the turn.

Field Commission began to close in on the leaders exiting the turn, and he came inside Disfunction in midstretch before drawing clear to complete the distance in 1:22.74. Dozen Dancer beat Timely Advice by a neck for second, and favored Rebellion was a nonthreatening fifth in the 11-horse field.

"He doesn't really want to switch leads," said Tyler Pizarro, who rode Field Commission. "I let him drift in [in the stretch], and then I popped him out, and he did switch and found another gear."

It was the first stakes victory for Field Commission, who earned $103,500 for the partnership of Ed Seltzer and trainer Danny Vella.
