Feature has Heir to Spare

CALGARY, Alberta - Trainer R.K. "Red" Smith, whose 19 victories at the conclusion of Monday's holiday program left him leading the Stampede Park standings by five over Robertino Diodoro, sends out Heir to Spare for Friday's $12,800 feature.

Heir to Spare should be favored to defeat five rivals in the six-furlong sprint, which runs as the seventh of eight races on the card.

A beaten choice in his last start, Heir to Spare will break from post 2 under regular rider Stephan Heiler.

Sly Lady captures Pearson

Sly Lady cruised to a 10 1/2-length victory over invader Full Scream Ahead in Monday's Ken Pearson Memorial, capturing her second straight handicap under Real Simard.

In her sprint victory in the M.R. Jenkins Memorial, Sly Lady had rallied from last to first with a sweeping move. But Simard changed tactics for Monday's stretch-out to a mile and pressed the early leader, Beausox, from the opening bell.

Sly Lady opened a length advantage after a quick half of 46.20 seconds, then was four in front at the quarter pole and 12 lengths ahead at the eighth pole.

Simard had Sly Lady under wraps in the lane, and she completed the mile in 1:36.00, just missing the course record of 1:35.80 set by Roll on Briartic in 1989.

Sly Lady received her second $10,000 bonus under the Horse Racing Alberta initiative rewarding Alberta-bred stakes winners and increased her seasonal bankroll to $70,400 for owners Verne and Ron Slywka.

It was the sixth win from just eight lifetime starts for Sly Lady. She will be pointed to the June 7 Duchess of York, an allowance stakes at 1 1/16 miles.
