Love and Pride, a multiple Grade 1-winning A.P. Indy mare from the family of champion and leading sire Bernardini, raised the bar on Monday night at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall selected mixed sale, selling to Borges Torrealba Holdings for $4.9 million

The 5-year-old mare, sold in foal to Distorted Humor, was a winner of seven of 17 starts during her two seasons of racing in 2011 and 2012 for earnings of $985,760. Her resume is highlighted by wins in the Grade 1 Personal Ensign Stakes at Saratoga and the Zenyatta Stakes at Santa Anita, as well as a score in the Grade 3 Obeah Stakes.

Bred in Kentucky by the Torrealba family’s Stud TNT, Love and Pride is out of the Grade 1-placed winning Storm Cat mare Ile de France, who is a producer of three winners from five foals to race. Her second dam is 2006 Broodmare of the Year Cara Rafaela, who produced champion Bernardini, by A.P. Indy. Cara Rafaela was campaigned by the Torrealba family.

“Well, I bred her,” Goncalo Torrealba said about Love and Pride following her purchase. “She was at the farm, and we really liked her.”

The Torrealba family owns Stud TNT in Brazil and recently made a major investment in Three Chimneys Farm to advance its U.S. operations. Three Chimneys consigned Love and Pride, as agent.

“I think she’s a special mare that only comes once every once in a while,” said Case Clay, president of Three Chimneys. “I’m very happy that she’s going to be coming back to Three Chimneys. Of course, Goncalo is partial to that family and knows that family well. She showed herself just beautifully all weekend.”

Love and Pride is also from the family of Grade 3 winners Abaginone and Thiskyhasnolimit.
