Fasig-Tipton November: In Lingerie, in foal to Frankel, sells for $2.4 million

In Lingerie, the first mare in the world offered at public auction in foal to unbeaten champion Frankel, sold for $2.4 million to Shadai Farm of Japan Monday night at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky fall mixed sale.

The 4-year-old daughter of Empire Maker was consigned by Bluewater Sales, as agent. She was offered in foal to Frankel on a May cover after being shipped to Juddmonte’s Banstead Manor Stud near Newmarket, England to be bred to the two-time European Horse of the Year. The Galileo horse, who was unbeaten in 15 starts, completed his first season with a star-studded book of including champions Zagora, Stacelita, and Vodka; Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Midday; and Grade/Group 1 winners Dar Re Mi and Balance.

“Certainly, you hold your breath,” Aron Wellman, president of Eclipse Thorougbred Partners, which campaigned In Lingerie in partnership, said of sending the mare overseas to be bred. “There are so many things beyond your control. You need the right horse that will cooperate, and she handled the entire journey so well. I tip my hat off to the mare. It was not an easy task we challenged her with, and she was the right mare to do it.”

In Lingerie won four of eight starts, earning $712,265. Her 2012 season was highlighted by a victory over elders in the Grade 1 Spinster Stakes over Keeneland’s Polytrack. She also captured the Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes and Grade 3 Bourbonette Oaks, finished second in the Grade 1 Alabama Stakes, and was third in the Grade 1 Coaching Club American Oaks.

The filly was trained by Todd Pletcher for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Gary Barber.

In Lingerie was offered as a racing or broodmare prospect at last year’s Fasig-Tipton November sale, but failed to meet her reserve at $2.2 million after going through the ring just days following her start in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf.

“She was not at her best in terms of how she was presenting herself physically,” Wellman said. “She was a shadow of the scopey, robust filly we know she is. It was just a function of the timing.”

In Lingerie is out of the Grade 2-winning Storm Cat mare Cat Chat, a half sister to Mini Chat, dam of Grade 1 winner Dixie Chatter and Grade 3 winner Rumor. In Lingerie’s second dam is Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner and champion Phone Chatter; it is the family of Grade 1 winner and sire Any Given Saturday.

"Very rarely do you get the opportunity to purchase a Grade 1 winner who is out of a Grade 2 winner by Storm Cat, who is out of a champion in Phone Chatter,” Meg Levy of Bluewater Sales said. “Coupled with Frankel, that makes her a rare offer."

In Lingerie was one of two Grade 1 winners offered in foal to Frankel Monday night, both of which are now bound for Japan. Katsumi Yoshida went to $1.9 million late in the evening to acquire Mi Sueno, a 6-year-old Pulpit mare also consigned by Bluewater. Mi Sueno is out of the Grade 1 winner Madcap Escapade, and from the family of Grade 1 winner Dubai Escapade.
