Fasig-Tipton: Declines at Midlantic yearling sale

The Fasig-Tipton Midlantic fall yearling sale concluded on Monday with decreased figures across the board compared with 2013.

A total of 275 yearlings were sold during the one-day sale for revenues of $6,023,900, down 19 percent compared with last year’s sale, which moved 289 horses for $7,469,900. The average sale price fell 15 percent, from $25,847 to $21,905, while the median dropped 41 percent, from $17,000 to $10,000.

The buyback rate finished at 28 percent on Monday, up significantly from last year when 14 percent of the horses offered finished under their reserves.

Despite the declines, the number of horses to sell for $200,000 or more grew from one to two. However, the overall number of six-figure horses fell from 11 last year to nine on Monday.

Both of the $200,000 offerings were purchased by Ellen Charles’ Hillwood Stable, a perennial leading buyer in the region.

Leading the sale was a $260,000 Flatter colt out of the stakes-winning Victory Gallop mare American Victory. The bay colt is the second foal out of the dam, who is out of the Grade 2 winner Who Did It and Run and is a sister to the Grade 3-placed multiple stakes producer Who’s Coxy. The family also includes Hangover Kid, winner of the Grade 2 Bowling Green Handicap earlier this year.

Bred in Maryland by Sycamore Hall Thoroughbreds, the sale-topping colt was consigned Northview Stallion Station, agent. He was the first foal out of the dam to sell at public auction.

The second-highest-priced Hillwood Stable purchase was a $200,000 Pure Prize , filly out of the Grade 3-winning Not For Love mare He Loves Me.

The filly was bred in Maryland and consigned by Dark Hollow Farm, agent. She is the second foal out of He Loves Me to bring $200,000 at auction.

The filly’s extended family includes Grade 1 winner M One Rifle, Grade 3-winning second dam Palliser Bay, and Grade 2-placed stakes winner For Kisses.
