Far West: Is eFamei for real?

PORTLAND, Ore. n The 10 fastest qualifiers from three trials run on Dec. 7 will vie for the richest purse at the Portland Meadows meeting in Sundayis $41,557 Far West Futurity for 2-year-old Quarter Horses at 400 yards.

The fastest qualifier is Dash of Fame, who won the third trial heat by three-quarters of a length over Jrs Four By Four in 20.43 for 400 yards. That is Dash of Fameis lone win from five starts, however, and itis questionable whether he will be favored on the basis of that one race.

Dash of Fame faces stern challenges from the other two trial winners, Cpr First Mate and Cpr First Straw. Cpr First Mate will be seeking his third straight win, having scored his maiden victory before winning the first trial in 20.68, while Cpr First Straw has won five races, including the Evergreen Futurity here in November. Cpr First Straw won the second trial in 20.58.

Jrs Four By Four clocked the second-fastest qualifying time (20.57) in running second to Dash of Fame and also figures to draw solid support off his record of

4 wins from 13 starts.

Phils Dash Ta Fame, who ran third to Dash of Fame and Jrs Four By Four as the 2-5 favorite in the third trial, poses the most difficult question to handicappers. Phils Dash Ta Fame has won five races, including the Firecracker Futurity at Grants Pass, but he has been well beaten in his last two tries at Portland Meadows.

The live race meet will break for the holidays after Sundayis card. Simulcast racing will continue each day except for Dec. 24-25, and live racing will resume Jan. 3.
