Fantasia starting '09 campaign

Owner George Strawbridge's European classic aspirations will be previewed at Newmarket on Wednesday, when his off-season purchase Fantasia makes her first start of the year in the Group 3, $95,000 Nell Gwyn Stakes, a seven-furlong trial for the 1000 Guineas on May 1.

Strawbridge bought Fantasia, a daughter of Sadler's Wells trained by Luca Cumani, in January, a few months after she had finished second to his European juvenile filly champ Rainbow View in Ascot's Group 1 Fillies Mile.

Fantasia had previously won the seven-furlong, Group 3 Prestige Stakes at Goodwood after having won her maiden first time out, going six furlongs on the Newmarket July Course.

On Wednesday, when she will be ridden by Frankie Dettori, Fantasia will be tested by Misdaqeya and Summer Fete. Misdaqeya was second by six lengths to Rainbow View in the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes in August. Summer Fete won the listed Radley Stakes last time out in October over Rosy Mantle, who won her American debut at Santa Anita in March.

Godolphin will have its first European runner of the year in the 1 1/4-mile, $578,000 Tattersalls Trophy with Liberation. Fourth in the key Tattersalls Million on Oct. 4, Liberation has since been runner-up to stablemate City Style in a 7 1/2-furlong turf allowance at Nad Al Sheba. Opposing is the Aidan O'Brien-trained Rockhampton, a Galileo colt who won his maiden going 1 1/4 miles at Leopardstown on March 29.
