Fancy As crowned in Manitoba


TORONTO, Ontario - Fancy As was honored as the Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society's 2001 horse of the year and champion 3-year-old male at the annual Manitoba awards dinner Feb. 23.

The Manitoba division of the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association also feted its champions at the Assiniboia Downs gathering, with Corporate Shuffle named horse of the year and champion 3-year-old colt or gelding.

The other winners of the CTHS awards, which are for Manitoba-breds, were What Four, 2-year-old filly; Rare Deputy, 2-year-old male; Nasty Millie, 3-year-old filly; Con's Night Flight, older filly or mare; Gus Again, older male; Terra Cotta, broodmare; and Circulating, stallion.

The other HBPA honorees were Sands Fury, 2-year-old filly; Ness Gadoll, 2-year-old male; Sassy Chimes, 3-year-old filly; Miss Sandy Dee, older filly or mare; Kalfaari, older male; Smokey Cinder, sprinter; and Western Quitz, claimer.

Owner Phil Kives was honored as outstanding breeder by the CTHS and also received a special award recognizing his contributions to the Manitoba Thoroughbred industry. Kives races as K-5 Stable and campaigned Corporate Shuffle, Ness Gadoll, and Rare Deputy. He is also the owner of both Terra Cotta and Circulating.

Leading jockey Rohan Singh and leading trainer Ardell Saylor were honored for the second straight year by the HBPA.

Leonard Anderson received the award for the top trainer in winning percentage.
