Fan signatures solicited

Racetracks and card clubs in California have begun gathering signatures for a proposed ballot initiative that could permit the installation of slot machines at five tracks and 11 card clubs.

Last weekend at Hollywood Park and Santa Anita, fans were greeted by employees of a company hired to gather signatures. The tracks and card clubs must have 600,000 signatures to qualify for the ballot. Rick Baedeker, president of Hollywood Park, said approximately one million signatures will be collected to ensure that enough are valid.
