Familiar faces at new meet


Following a one-week break, racing resumes at Prairie Meadows on Tuesday when the track begins its 40-day mixed meet. The cast of jockeys and trainers is mostly unchanged from the recently concluded Thoroughbred meet.

Racing is conducted at the Altoona, Iowa, track and casino on Mondays, Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays for most of the meet, with the exception of racing on Sunday, Sept. 2. Post time on Monday and Tuesday is

3:30 p.m., while the Friday and Saturday cards begin at 6:30 p.m.

There will be six Thoroughbred and four Quarter Horse races daily. Thoroughbreds will be running for daily average purses of $117,106, while the Quarter Horse purses will average $67,500. The highlight of the meet is Iowa Classics Night on Aug. 25. The card comprises seven Throughbred stakes and four Quarter Horse dashes. The Iowa Classics Sprint has been added to the stakes schedule that night, with 3-year-olds and upward going six furlongs for a $50,000 purse.

Terry Thompson won the Thoroughbred meet riding title with 61 wins, while Glenn Corbett and Tim Doocy were right behind with 56 and 52 wins, respectively. All three are back for the mixed meet, as are Alex Birzer, Richard Monterrey, Joel Campbell, Carlos Montalvo, and Ken Shino.

Perennial training leader Dick Clark captured the spring title with 51 wins and will be joined at the mixed meet by Lynn Chleborad and Kelly Von Hemel.
