Familiar duo meet again

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - A full field of 12 3-year-old colts and geldings foaled in Manitoba has been entered for Saturday's $40,000 Manitoba Stakes at one mile.

Your Excellence, winner of the restricted Frank Arnason Sire Stakes and CTHS Sales Stakes last year, has raced three times this year, all against first-level allowance company here. In his first start of the year, on May 7, Your Excellence finished third, beaten 1 1/4 lengths as the 8-5 favorite. Your Excellence then finished second, 16 lengths behind subsequent Golden Boy Stakes winner Prime Time T.V. on May 22.

In his last start, June 10, Your Excellence ran fourth, three lengths behind longshot winner Raggidy Row as the even-money favorite.

Resurgent won a maiden claiming race in his first start of the year on May 8. Among those he defeated were Articulate, who won his maiden next time out, and Lil Cow, who has won two races since then.

Resurgent faced Your Excellence in his next two races. After finishing 6 1/4 lengths behind Your Excellence on May 22, Resurgent ran second to Raggidy Row on June 10 while leaving Your Excellence a half-length back in third.

Whiskey Drive won 2 of 4 starts last year and finished second behind this year's Woodbine Oaks winner Gold Strike here in the Buffalo Stakes. Whiskey Drive is the only horse in the field with a win around two turns.

In his only start this year, Whiskey Drive finished seventh, beaten 12 1/2 lengths, in a tough second-level allowance race against older foes May 8.

Longshot players may want to consider Snowy Old Man, Brinello, and Hawk de Gold as horses who could improve with the added distance.

Completing the field are Icelandic Conquest, Elevenseventyseven, Dream Step, Cryptic, Mr. Jetson, and Wild River Dancer.
