POMONA, Calif. – Christian Santiago-Reyes rode four winners Wednesday at Fairplex Park, including odds-on Carbonite in the $50,000 Governor’s Cup Handicap, as the jockey race gets interesting at the Los Angeles County Fair.
Martin Pedroza rode a winner to remain atop the standings; the four-bagger by Santiago-Reyes narrowed Pedroza’s advantage to 22-17. The 13-day meet concludes Sunday.
“The kid rode a good race,” trainer Mike Mitchell said after Carbonite ($3.40) rolled to a 2 3/4-length win over Details R Sketchy. The pacesetter Earnednevergiven weakened to third, while 2010 Pomona Derby winner Bench the Judge finished last while making his first start in nearly a year.
Santiago-Reyes tucked Carbonite fourth on the rail in the Governor’s Cup, turned him loose early at the three-eighths pole when the pace began to back up, and Carbonite opened up into the far turn. He was never threatened thereafter, winning the 6 1/2-furlong race in 1:17.25, fastest time of the meet at the distance.
Carbonite has won two races and $84,077 in five starts since owners Anthony Chacon and Paul Mangini claimed him in May for $32,000. Carbonite has won 8 of 17 overall.
The Governor’s Cup was run Wednesday under the lights; racing continues Thursday with standard first post time of 1 p.m.

Facing a shallow field of maiden-20 for fillies and mares, second-time starter MISS MADDIE BEE can be long gone at a short price. She dueled through a hot pace before tiring in her maiden-40 debut, but now shortens to five and one-half furlongs, drops to the bottom, and figures to clear the field. Adios. AWESOMEKAYLEE has a pair of good-looking gate works the past two weeks, and makes her career debut against a shallow group. Sired by Awesome Again, she is the first foal out of 9-for-38 mare Getcozywithkaylee. LOVE MY GIRL was well-backed in her comeback, but lost her rider.
