Fairplex: Literal Prowler surprises

POMONA, Calif. - A deep closer won the $49,500 Phil D. Shepherd Stakes at Fairplex Park, but not the one most bettors expected. Literal Prowler ($12.20) rallied from last to outfinish late-runner Grey Memo, the 8-5 favorite, by three-quarters of a length in the 1 1/16-mile stakes.

Tyler Baze rode the Mike Mitchell-trained Literal Prowler, a 7-year-old gelding by Literati. The win was Literal Prowler's eighth from 35 starts, and his first since being claimed one start back for $50,000. The Shepherd gives Literal Prowler license to take on Budroyale and Native Desert in the biggest race of the meet, the $100,000 Ralph H. Hinds Pomona Invitational Handicap on Sept. 23.
