POMONA, Calif. – Bares Tripper crushed the $100,000 Barretts Debutante by more than six lengths Saturday at Fairplex Park, while heavily favored Pure Indy finished a flat fifth.
Peter Miller trains Bares Tripper, who was making her first start since Aug. 8. After a winning debut Aug. 8 in an $80,000 maiden-claimer at Del Mar, she wheeled back two weeks later and finished last in the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes.
Miller freshened the daughter of Sky Mesa and aimed her to the Barretts, a 6 ½-furlong stakes restricted to 2-year-old fillies offered at a Barrett sale. Bares Tripper was purchased for $45,000 at the May sale after posting the fastest one-furlong breeze (9.80 seconds) of the sale.
Ridden by Martin Pedroza, Bares Tripper pressed the early pace, took charge into the far turn, and widened through the lane to win by 6 ¼ lengths. She was timed in 1:18.14. Qiaona finished second, one length in front of Miss Derek. The winner is owned by David Lanzman and Jason Wood.
The disappointment was 7-5 favorite Pure Indy, a smashing debut winner two weeks earlier at Del Mar. Pure Indy settled in sixth early, but failed to respond when jockey Aaron Gryder asked her into the far turn. Gryder told trainer Craig Dollase she was flat.
“He just said she was a little flat today. Sometimes that happens,” Dollase said. Pure Indy was wheeling back two weeks after an impressive debut victory at Del Mar.
Bares Tripper was the third win Saturday for Pedroza, who climbed to third in the standings. Pedroza has nine wins at the meet, four behind leader Edwin Maldonado and one behind Juan Hernandez.
