POMONA, Calif. – Upset winners in both divisions of the Bangles and Beads Stakes on Friday at Fairplex Park helped generate a pick six carryover of $31,604 into Saturday.
Edwin Maldonado won three races Friday, including the first division of the $50,000 Bangles and Beads to extend his lead over Martin Pedroza to eight wins. Maldonado has 23 wins. Pedroza, leading rider at Fairplex 13 straight years, was blanked Friday and has 15 wins at the meet.
Kindle ($8.20) was bet down from 8-1 in the program, and raced wire to wire in race 8, the faster division of the filly-and-mare sprint stakes. She won by three lengths in 1:17.76 for 6 1/2 furlongs. Great Hot finished second, All On the Table ran third. The 2-1 favorite Candrea finished last of six.
Trained by Gary Mandella, Kindle was starting for the first time since February. A 4-year-old by Indian Charlie, Kindle has won 3 of 6.
Gem of Soul ($29.60) and jockey Alonso Quinonez won race 10, the second division of the stakes, in 1:18.47. Camille C finished a neck back in second; 1-2 favorite American Lady weakened to third.
Trainer A.C. Avila said Gem of Soul, a 4-year-old bred in Brazil, bled in her most recent start at Del Mar. Her win in the Bangles and Beads was her first start since July 27. She has won 4 of 10.

HOLY ACADEMY displayed respectable grass form last spring, before performing well on the Poly. She's stretching out off a third behind a runner-up who came back to finish second in the Ballade Stakes, and could be dangerous as the controlling speed in this optional claimer. QUEEN OF THE WAVES rallied wide from mid-pack to beat N1X allowance stock following a layoff when she last saw action March 29 at the Fair Grounds. She can obviously fire while fresh, and should be prominent under Da Silva, who broke her maiden.
