Fairmount : Two get second wins of meet

Melana and Chipotle became the first multiple winners of the Fairmount meet with victories in Tuesday's two allowance features. Melana, following up on her opening-day maiden win, held off a challenge from the stakes-placed Cloudy and Rain to capture a first-level allowance going 5 1/2 furlongs. The 3-year-old Melana remains undefeated for trainer Kelly Ackerman, who acquired her from trainer Helen Pitts earlier this year.

Chipotle, also a winner opening day, scored in Tuesday's featured optional claimer, also at 5 1/2 furlongs. The only horse entered for the optional $8,000 claiming price, Chipotle defeated a solid group including a sharp Turfway invader, Hoho Tow, and Mr. Canyon Run, a leading locally based 3-year-old last season.

Another who had a successful day Tuesday was jockey Rafael Hernandez, last year's leading rider, who won four races on the eight-race card. Despite not riding for leading trainer Ralph Martinez, whose success rate so far has been hovering near the 45-percent mark, Hernandez has been able to keep pace with Martinez's first-call rider, Camilo Pitty, who had two winners Tuesday and held a one-win advantage at the conclusion of the day's program.

* Fans won't have to wait long for Friday night's feature, as the first-level allowance for fillies and mares kicks off the daily double. Martinez's entry of Youcanhearmenow and Lexi's Moon is likely to go favored. Lexi's Moon is seemingly the stronger of the two, coming off a close second-place finish in a $10,000 claimer at Hawthorne, but Youcanhearmenow offers some appeal, as she was sharp enough to win her first start here during the 2006 meet.

Little Lady T earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 73 when she was a fast-closing fourth at this level opening week, and should appreciate the stretchout from 4 1/2 furlongs to 5 1/2 furlongs.
