Fairmount: Fifteen Rounds ships in

COLLINSVILLE, Ill. - Fairmount Park's $25,000-added Roman Colonel Stakes for 3-year-old colts and geldings has drawn the undefeated Chicago invader Fifteen Rounds.

Fifteen Rounds won his maiden for trainer Christine Janks at Hawthorne on April 1, then steadily progressed through the allowance ranks while winning his next two at Arlington. All of Fifteen Rounds's races have been at the six-furlong distance of the Roman Colonel. Jerry LaSala will be in for the mount.

Although Fifteen Rounds will face only four opponents, all locally based, the race hardly figures to be a walkover.

Ww Conquistador finished second by a half-length to Dr. Spellbinder in last fall's Little Brother Stakes at Hawthorne and comes into the race off back-to-back wins here. In his last race, he controlled the pace in an overnight handicap at a mile and hung on gamely to win by a head.

Ww Conquistador, who carries top weight of 119 pounds, figures to run well shortening to six furlongs.

Mr. Mink has a good chance to upset. An Indiana-bred, Mr. Mink won his maiden easily at Hoosier Park last fall in his only start at 2. Trained by Michael Nance, Mr. Mink made his second career start May 26 in the restricted Veterans Stakes at Indiana Downs. He dueled for the lead before weakening late, and was beaten less than two lengths. Nance will add blinkers to Mr. Mink, who worked five furlongs from the gate in 59.80 seconds wearing the new equipment here on June 24. Leading Fairmount rider Joel Santiago has the mount.
