Fair Grounds: Two Saturday turf stakes rescheduled due to wet conditions
By Bob Fortus
Email
NEW ORLEANS – The Colonel E.R. Bradley Handicap and Marie Krantz Memorial Stakes, turf races that were to be run Saturday at the Fair Grounds, have been pushed back to Jan. 26 because of wet conditions.
It has been an unusually wet month in New Orleans. The last turf race run at the meet was the Dixie Poker Ace on Jan. 5. The track lost an entire card, on Jan. 10, because of heavy rain.
The Bradley, a Grade 3 race for older horses, drew 26 nominations, including Strike Impact, winner of the Diliberto Memorial at the Fair Grounds. Grade I winner Daisy Devine, who won the Blushing K.D. at this meet, is the most significant of 16 Krantz nominees.
Without the Bradley and the Krantz, three stakes will be run Saturday – the Grade 3 Lecomte for 3-year-olds, the Silverbulletdayfor 3-year-old fillies, and Louisiana Handicap for older horses.
Best Bets
NO NAY NEVER didn't break all that well in his debut but he moved up smoothly to make the lead after about 100 yards, and after he withstood a stretch challenge from the eventual runner-up he won while virtually in hand; trainer Wesley Ward is lethal with 2-year-olds and this colt figures very tough here with an effort as good as that first one. SWEET EMMA ROSE, an uncoupled stablemate of the top pick, meets males but she's clearly a threat off that debut romp; barn seems to hold all the aces.
