Fair Grounds: Two recent winners won’t hurry back

Email

Two good-looking recent Fair Grounds maiden route winners, Avie’s Sense and Tetradrachm, won’t be racing in Saturday stakes.

Avie’s Sense, who ran the fastest one mile, 70 yards of the 2011-2012 meet when she won a Jan. 5 maiden race, almost certainly won’t contest the Silverbulletday Stakes on Saturday, trainer Josie Carroll said.

“It’s a little quick back, just 15 days,” said Carroll. “I’ll probably just aim her for the Rachel Alexandra.”

The $200,000 Rachel Alexandra will be contested Feb. 25. The Silverbulletday, likely to have a short field, is headed by unbeaten Applauding.

Tetradrachm, meanwhile, came out of a Jan. 6 route maiden race in good order, trainer Paul McGee said, but as with Avie’s Tale, the Lecomte is coming up too quickly, with Tetradrachm likely to be aimed at a first-level allowance race.

“I’m not pointing him for [the Lecomte],” McGee said. “I’d say he’s very doubtful.”

The Lecomte still could attract 11 or 12 3-year-olds when the race is drawn Wednesday.
