Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans on Tuesday announced plans to open the track’s infield to fans on Louisiana Derby Day, March 30. A release from the track said that the Fair Grounds infield hasn’t been accessible to the public during a race day since the 1930s. Patrons will cross from the apron to the infield – going over the main track and the turf course – on temporary bridges borrowed from Pimlico Race Course. Billed as Infield Festival, the event will include a large gathering of food trucks and a performance by the band Cowboy Mouth. General admission tickets, which go on sale in January, can be purchased for $25, with VIP packages available at $60 and higher. The Louisiana Derby Day card will start later than normal, with first post scheduled at 2 p.m. rather than the normal 12:40.
