Fair Grounds: Havre de Grace fires a five-furlong bullet

Havre de Grace worked a bullet five furlongs in 59.80 seconds on Monday at Fair Grounds.

While Larry Jones’s 3-year-olds all worked after the break on Monday at Fair Grounds, 2011 Horse of the Year Havre de Grace was out as soon as the track opened at 6 a.m. to put in her most serious drill of 2012. Havre de Grace had her first five-furlong breeze of the year, working in a bullet 59.80 seconds.

Jones has said for a couple weeks that Havre de Grace would quickly come to hand once he put her on a regular breeze schedule, and that appears to be the case. Havre de Grace got back on the work tab with three furlongs in 37.80 on Feb. 10 and worked a half-mile in 48.60 on Feb. 15. So, just 10 days after her first work of the year, Havre de Grace was posting a bullet five furlongs.

“Once you start letting her realize it’s time to do something, she’s ready to do it,” Jones said. “She’s back in the game, and we’re to the point now that she’ll be ready when there’s a race for her.”

Jones said no decision had been made on where Havre de Grace would make her 2012 debut, but the mare is likely to start March 17. On that date, Fair Grounds hosts the New Orleans Ladies and Oaklawn Park the Azeri Stakes. Jones plans to start Havre de Grace in one of those races and Joyful Victory in the other.

“We’ll probably make a game plan in the next week or so,” he said.
