Fair Grounds cancels after heavy rain

Fair Grounds canceled its Thursday card after heavy rain hit the track late in the morning. The cancellation was the first of the 2012-2013 meet.

Rain began falling in New Orleans earlier in the morning before a line of strong storms with powerful rain hit the area around 11:30. More strong storms were possible later in the afternoon.

“The track is sealed, but I think everybody is worried that we’re going to get more weather on top of what we already had,” said the track's assistant general manager, Eric Halstrom. “Stewards, riders, and track management all agreed that it would be best to cancel.”

Halstrom said that races lost Thursday would be brought back on upcoming programs beginning as soon as Sunday.

Rain is forecast through next week, but nothing like Thursday’s extreme precipitation, and the track should be able to resume racing on Friday.
