The Factor sires his first winner

Email

The Factor, a popular sire at sales the past several years, sired his first winner on July 9 when the juvenile filly Senora Acero won a maiden race at a mile on turf at Ellis Park. Making her second start, Senora Acero was reserved off the early pace by Marcelino Pedroza and rallied in the stretch to win by two lengths as the 4-1 third choice in the seven-horse field.

Owned by Martin Racing Stable and trained by Bret Calhoun, Senora Acero was bred in Kentucky by Fazenda Mondesir International, S.A. and purchased for $40,000 at the 2015 Keeneland September yearling sale. She is out of the Distorted Humor mare Riboletti.

The Factor, by War Front out of the Miswaki mare Greyciousness, was a Grade 1-winning sprinter who stands at Lane’s End in Versailles, Ky. He had 76 yearlings sell last year for an average price of $140,894, more than nine times his $15,000 stud fee when he began his stallion career in 2013. This year, he had 38 2-year-olds sell at sales for an average of $141,463. He stood the 2016 season for a fee of $25,000.

Bred in Kentucky by H & W Thoroughbreds, The Factor was sold as a weanling for $50,000 at the 2008 Keeneland November breeding stock sale, purchased by Iroquois Bloodstock III. He was pinhooked for a loss at the 2009 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale, being bought by agent Kim Valerio for $40,000.

At the 2010 Barretts May sale of 2-year-olds in training, George Bolton purchased The Factor for $250,000 from the consignment of Jerry Bailey Sales Agency, agent.

Turned over to trainer Bob Baffert and racing for Bolton and Fog City Stable, The Factor proved to be a top sprinter, winning six of 13 starts while racing from ages 2 to 4 and earning $922,180.

In his first start at 3, he won the Grade 2, seven-furlong San Vicente and then shipped to Oaklawn to take the Grade 2, 1 1/16-mile Rebel Stakes in gate-to-wire fashion by 6 1/2 lengths over Caleb’s Posse. After running seventh in Archarcharch’s Arkansas Derby, he was kept to one-turn races the remainder of his career. Later at 3, he won the Grade 1 Pat O’Brien at Del Mar over Camp Victory and Crown of Thorns and the Grade 1 Malibu at Santa Anita over Rothko, both at seven furlongs.

In his first start at 4, The Factor won the Grade 2, seven-furlong San Carlos at Santa Anita over Sway Away and Amazombie. In his last career start, he was second to Amazombie in the Grade 1 Bing Crosby at Del Mar.

He has 105 foals in his first crop and 108 yearlings in his second crop.
