F-T sale continues healthy

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Fasig-Tipton Midlantic's May 2-year-old sale, which posted gains for gross receipts and median price in Monday's opener, continued into its second and final day with strong early results.

A $320,000 Smoke Glacken colt led all selling Tuesday at 5 p.m. Klaravich Stables bought the colt, a bay son of Baydon Belle, from Niall Brennan Stables, agent. Baydon Belle is by Al Nasr. The colt, who sold as Hip No. 402, breezed the fastest three-eighths on May 18, covering the distance in 33.20 seconds.

Led by a $260,000 Unbridled's Song filly, Monday's opening session rang up 10 percent increases in gross and median, selling 160 lots for a total of $4,905,200 and a median price of $22,000. A year ago, the auction sold 140 juveniles for $4,451,100 and a median price of $20,000. The average price fell slightly this season, slipping from last year's $31,794 to $30,658.

The opening-day buy-back rate was 30 percent, a slight improvement from last year's 31 percent.

Richard Dutrow bought Monday's topper, who was from the Hartley-DeRenzo Thoroughbreds agency. The filly is out of the stakes-placed Dixieland Band mare Rockaroller.
