Exercise rider killed at Pimlico

A female exercise rider working a horse at Pimlico Race Course on Tuesday morning was killed in an accident on the racetrack, Pimlico officials said Tuesday. The accident occurred approximately 4 1/2 furlongs from the finish line on the Pimlico training track, according to Mike Gathagan, Pimlico's director of broadcasting and communications.

Gathagan and other Pimlico officials would not provide any additional details about the fatality on Tuesday, including the rider's name, citing a pending report about the accident. Pimlico is not currently open for racing.

"We want to dot all the I's and cross all the T's, and make sure the report is 100 percent correct," Gathagan said. "As you know, if you talk to 10 different people, you get 10 different stories, and the details are so sketchy that our security people are still trying to find out the details."

Gathagan said the report would be ready by Friday at the latest.

A track official said the rider was working for trainer Charles Frock. Efforts to reach Frock were unsuccessful Tuesday afternoon.
