Ex-jockey Dale Long dies

Email

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Funeral services are pending for former jockey Dale Long, 64, who died Thursday in Santa Rosa.

Long, who competed at every track in California as well as the old Aqua Caliente track, rode for 20 years before joining the marketing departments at Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields in 1979. He trained briefly and also served as a jockey's agent.

Long's most memorable victory was a stakes win aboard the Appaloosa Manitou Rock at Vallejo. Manitou Rock set a track record in the victory even though his saddle slipped badly and Long crossed the finish line with one foot balancing in the middle of the horse's back.
