Evita Argentina scores in Sorrento

DEL MAR, Calif. - Evita Argentina ($17.20) gave the stallion Candy Ride his first stakes winner in Wednesday’s $150,000 Sorrento Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar.

Evita Argentina ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:17.51, extending her unbeaten streak to two races. Trained by John Sadler for Halo Farms and Three Sisters Thoroughbreds, Evita Argentina won her debut in a maiden race at five furlongs at Hollywood Park on June 25.

Ridden by Tyler Baze, Evita Argentina closed from sixth in the Grade 3 Sorrento. Stardom Bound, the 9-5 favorite, finished second with a wide rally, a length behind Evita Argentina.

Glitter City finished third, but was demoted from third to fourth by the stewards after an inquiry for interfering with the Sadler-trained Emmy Darling in the stretch.

The Sorrento Stakes was a prep for the $250,000 Del Mar Debutante at seven furlongs on Sept. 1. Sadler said that both Evita Argentina and Emmy Darling would be pointed for that Grade 1 race.

Candy Ride stands at Hill ‘n’ Dale Farm in Kentucky for $12,500.
