Evening Jewel, Eclipse finalist, retired

Evening Jewel, with Kent Desormeaux up, wins the Ashland in 2010.

Evening Jewel, a two-time Grade 1 winner and a finalist for the Eclipse Award as the nation's outstanding 3-year-old filly of 2010, has been retired and is in the process of being sold, trainer Jim Cassidy said on Friday.

Owner Marilyn Braly has reached a private deal with Aaron and Marie Jones, who intend to ship the 4-year-old Evening Jewel to Kentucky later this month, Cassidy said. She will be bred in 2012. The deal was expected to be finalized this weekend, contingent on a routine veterinary exam, Cassidy said.

Evening Jewel finished sixth in her final start, the Grade 1 Humana Distaff at Churchill Downs on May 7, on the Kentucky Derby undercard. By Northern Afleet, Evening Jewel won 7 of 19 starts and $1,221,399. She was the California-bred Horse of the Year in 2010.

Cassidy said Braly made the decision after the loss at Churchill Downs. "Mrs. Braly, said, 'It's time for me to sell,' " Cassidy said. "On the way back from Derby Day, she said, 'It's emotionally draining on me too much. I've got to sell.'

"She can go to Kentucky and see her. I had an offer from Europe and Japan, but she said she'd enjoy going to Kentucky to see her."

Terms of the deal were not announced.

Evening Jewel won six stakes in a three-year career. She raced for Braly and her late husband, Tom, who was a frequent visitor to the races despite fighting cancer until his death last September. Tom Braly was at Del Mar on Aug. 21 when Evening Jewel won the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks.

Other highlights of Evening Jewel's career were wins in the Grade 1 Ashland Stakes at Keeneland and a second, by a nose, to eventual division champion Blind Luck in the Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks, both in April 2010.

"The Ashland was great," Cassidy said. "The Kentucky Oaks, even though we got beat, was probably the most exciting of all the races. Winning the Del Mar Oaks for [Tom] was probably the highlight."

This year, Evening Jewel had 1 win in 5 starts, the Sunshine Millions Distaff at Santa Anita in January.
