Evening Attire honored in New York


Evening Attire, Left Bank, and the connections of Breeders' Cup Classic winner Volponi head the list of New York Turf Writers Association winners for 2002.

Evening Attire, who won a graded stakes over each of the four New York Racing Association dirt surfaces, won the Secretariat Award as New York's horse of the year. Left Bank won the C.V. Whitney Award for achievement by setting a Belmont track record in the Tom Fool and equaling the Saratoga nine-furlong track record winning the Whitney. Team Volponi, led by trainer Phil Johnson, his family-owned Amherst Stable, and jockey Jose Santos, were named as the recipient of the inaugural NYTWA Presidents Award.

Other winners include John Velazquez (outstanding jockey), Bobby Frankel and Todd Pletcher (outstanding trainer), Sanford Goldfarb (outstanding owner), Edgar Prado (Fourstardave Award for achievement at Saratoga), Bob Flynn (Red Smith "Good Guy" Award), Gander (outstanding New York-bred) and the Phipps Family/Edward P. Evans (outstanding breeder).

The NYTWA's 80th annual awards dinner will be held at the Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs on Aug. 18.
