Evangeline: Unitas takes Need for Speed

Email

OPELOUSAS, La. - Stalking the pace under clever handling by Mark Guidry, Unitas finished strongly to prove best in Friday night's $50,000 Need for Speed at Evangeline Downs.

Sweetsouthernmoon, who trailed early in the five-furlong turf dash, did his best running late and reported home second, a length behind the winner. Thunder Harbor, within striking distance throughout, lacked a winning kick and had to settle for third, followed by Bravo Habbi.

Cominsky’s Humor, the 9-10 favorite, gave way suddenly after setting the pace and clearing in the turn to finish fifth and last.

The original field of 10 was cut in half by the late scratches of Southern Style, Whiskey Rebellion, Seeking Payday, Preaching Deacon, and Raiseanothergator. The final time over firm turf was 57.35 seconds.

Trained by Brett Brinkman, Unitas ($9.60) won for the seventh time in 26 starts. A son of Japanese sire Sunday Break, Unitas picked up his second turf victory from six starts over the surface and has now earned just over $250,000 for owner P. Dale Ladner.
