Evangeline: Star Guitar will miss Evangeline Mile with quarter crack

Star Guitar will be unable to defend his title in the Evangeline Mile.

OPELOUSAS, La. - Three-time winner and reigning Evangeline Mile champ Star Guitar will not defend his title when Evangeline Downs runs its signature event in the handicap division next Saturday night. The richest Louisiana-bred of all time with earnings of more than $1.75 million, Star Guitar, who recently won an unprecedented fourth Louisiana Legends Classic at Evangeline, was conspicuously absent when entries for the Mile were drawn Saturday.

"He’s got a quarter crack in one of his rear hooves," Star Guitar’s trainer Al Stall Jr. said from his Saratoga base Sunday morning. "It’s in the same spot where he had one once before. It’s up at the hairline so it is going to take some time to grow out."

Stall will still be represented in the Mile, as he will send out starting highweight Apart at 122 pounds. Apart is a multiple graded winner, including the Grade 2 Super Derby in 2010.
