Evangeline, Equine Sales Company partners on new stakes for 3-year-olds

Equine Sales Company and Evangeline Downs near Opelousas, La., have created a pair of stakes for 3-year-old sales graduates, the organizations announced Friday. The races will be worth $75,000 each, and will debut in the spring of 2016. There will be a division for fillies and one for colts and geldings.

The stakes will be restricted to graduates of any of the three Equine Sales Company auctions held at the auction house in Opelousas each year: the 2-year-olds in-training sale in the spring; the consignor select yearling sale in late summer; and the open yearling and mixed sale in the fall. In addition, graduates of the 2015 Stars of Tomorrow 2-year-olds in-training sale held this past spring at Evangeline will also be eligible for the 2016 races with that auction now discontinued, according to the release.

“With our sales pavilion being located so close to Evangeline Downs, we think this partnership is a win-win for everyone involved, including the horsemen,” Foster Bridewell, sales director for Equine Sales, said in a release. “We purposefully designated this race for 3-year-olds as opposed to 2-year-olds to give owners and trainers another racing opportunity on what is already a great stakes schedule at Evangeline.”

The 2-year-olds in-training sale and the new sales stakes will be held on the same weekend next spring, and Evangeline will host a gala event at the track for horsemen, including buyers and consignors. The organizations will announce more details about the new stakes in the future, according to the release.
