Evangeline Downs handle down from 2010

Handle at the recently concluded Evangeline Downs season was down 9.42 percent from 2010, according to the audit division of the Louisiana Racing Commission. Total all-sources handle for the 89-day meeting that wrapped up last Saturday was $117,206,658, an average of $1,316,928 per card. Last year, Evangeline wagering on the same number of dates totaled $129,400,493.

Ontrack wagering at Evangeline showed an increase of less than 1 percent with $5,064,486 bet locally this season compared to $5,029,245 from a year ago.

Diego Saenz, a 32-year-old native of Chihuahua, Mexico, won his second riding in three years with 84 wins and mount earnings in excess of $1.4 million. Longtime Evangeline veteran Gerard Melancon finished second in the standings with 67 trips to the winner’s circle followed closely by apprentice C.J. McMahon with 65.

Karl Broberg captured the training title by sending out 53 winners from 181 starters for an impressive success rate of almost 30 percent. Sam Breaux saddled 35 winners to finish second in the standings for the fifth year in a row.
