Evangeline Downs: Going to Kukaro seeks second stakes win in Tellike

Going to Kukaro (inside) won the Genuine Devotion Stakes last May at Belmont Park and seeks her second stakes win in Saturday's Tellike.

Going to Kukaro, a stakes winner at Belmont Park last year, leads a deep field for Saturday night’s $50,000 Tellike Stakes at Evangeline Downs. The five-furlong dash on turf will go as the 10th of 11 races.

Victorious in the Genuine Devotion Stakes on the Peter Pan undercard last May, Going to Kukaro was not seen again until the Happy Ticket Stakes at Fair Grounds on March 16. Stalking the pace that day, the 5-year-old Speightstown mare was forced to steady in traffic in upper stretch and checked out to finish sixth. Trainer Pat Devereux is hoping for a cleaner trip Saturday as he enlists the services of leading rider Diego Saenz.

Storm’s Promise, a three-time winner on turf who narrowly missed in the Happy Ticket, looks to continue the remarkable success that trainer Karl Broberg has enjoyed in the first month of the meeting. Broberg has won with 26 of 53 starters at the current stand. Gerard Melancon will ride Storm’s Promise.

Other notables in the Tellike include Jossy Do It, a wire-to-wire winner in the Hallowed Dreams over the main track here last month; Fast City, a winner of six consecutive races in her seven-race career; Cowgirl N Up, a stakes winner for owner and trainer Caroline Dodwell; and Cho Cho Cat, who appears to be one of only a few in the Tellike with the ability to rally from off the pace.
