Evangeline Downs: Coteau Kitten returns to favorite track for Opelousas

Coteau Kitten, winner of the filly division of the D.S. “Shine” Young Futurity in early July, returns to Evangeline Downs on Saturday night for the $50,000 Opelousas Stakes. She will face four rivals at six furlongs in the season’s final stakes event.

Trained by Pat Devereaux Jr., Coteau Kitten will be seeking to get back in the winning habit after suffering her first defeat in four starts in the Louisiana Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes at Louisiana Downs three weeks ago. She was forced to settle for second that afternoon after being outdueled by Kaki’s Storm as the 1-5 favorite. As a three-time Evangeline winner, Coteau Kitten enjoys a significant home track advantage. Regular rider Diego Saenz will once again be in the saddle.

Culotte, winner of the Mountaineer Juvenile Filly Stakes in her last start, invades from trainer Tom Amoss’s base at Churchill Downs. In addition to her stakes score at Mountaineer, Culotte won at first asking against maiden special weight foes at Churchill Downs. Sandwiched between her two wins, Culotte staged a steady retreat in the Grade 3 Debutante at Churchill as the 8-5 favorite. After making amends in West Virginia, Culotte will vie with Coteau Kitten for favoritism. Gerard Melancon will ride Culotte.
