Evangeline Downs: Cho Cho Cat rallies to win Tellike Stakes

Taking advantage of a blistering early pace, Cho Cho Cat staged a furious rally from last in the final furlong to win Saturday night’s $50,000 Tellike Stakes at Evangeline Downs.

Going to Kukaro, co-favored with Storm’s Promise at 5-2 in the five-furlong turf dash for fillies and mares, forced the issue before putting a head in front a furlong out but was unable to contain the winner. Cowgirl N Up finished third, followed by Storm’s Promise.

Jockey Colby Hernandez took Cho Cho Cat ($51.80) back to last after the start and stayed there while fellow longshot Ada Mae carved out early fractions of 21.25 and 43.35 seconds. Hernandez then swung the 5-year-old daughter of Tale of the Cat to the far outside for the drive, and the two flew home to win by 1 1/4 lengths in 55.32 over firm going.

Robert Long Jr. trains the winner for Michael Almerico II and Pete Horton. Cho Cho Cat won for the sixth time in 20 starts and for the third time in 11 attempts on grass. The $30,000 winner’s share of the Tellike purse pushed her career bankroll over $137,000.
