Europe: Irish Derby favorite rallies late

Heavily favored High Chaparral completed the English Derby-Irish Derby double, taking the lead from stablemate Sholokhov with 200 yards remaining and drawing off to a 3 1/2-length win at the Curragh.

Although the margin wasn't close at the finish, the 1-5 High Chaparral appeared to be in trouble when he was carried a bit to the left by eventual fourth-place finisher Nysaean inside the final two furlongs while in fourth position. Jockey Michael Kinane gave High Chaparral several slaps and he soon ranged alongside Sholokhov, a 200-1 longshot. Once in front, Kinane was able to push High Chaparral and he stretched clear to complete the 1 1/2 miles in 2:32.20.

At Saint-Cloud in Paris, 3-5 favorite Aquarelliste was upset by Ange Gabriel, the longest shot in a six-horse field, in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud.

The 16-1 Ange Gabriel took over almost two furlongs from home and was hard ridden by Thierry Jarnet to hold off Polish Summer and Aquarelliste by two lengths and a short head in the 1 1/2-mile race.

Pearly Shells won the Group 2 Prix de Malleret by a hard-fought short neck from the Prix de Diane third, Ana Marie. The winner, a British-bred daughter of Efisio, is trained by Francois Rohaut.

Pearly Shells scored in 2:28.60, 0.40 of a second slower than Ange Gabriel, who will now be put away until September. Both he and Aquarelliste are likely to have one race before the Arc.
