Eternal Cup up late by a neck

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Eternal Cup rallied from well off a hot pace to win the $50,000 Carousel Stakes at Oaklawn Park by a neck on Saturday. Surf N Sand finished second, 1 1/4 lengths in front of third-place finisher See How She Runs.

The race was marred by the spill of Puffy Shirt going into the turn of the six-furlong race. She went down along the rail with jockey Tim Doocy, and later got up and was vanned off the track. Doocy walked away from the fall and did not appear to sustain major injuries.

Eternal Cup ($10.40) raced last early, while Puffy Shirt dueled through an opening quarter in 21.17 seconds with 35-1 shot Winning Fever. Winning Fever went on to cover a half-mile in 44.80 seconds. Eternal Cup then rallied through the stretch to catch Surf N Sand.

Eternal Cup covered the six furlongs for fillies and mares in 1:10.82.

Terry Thompson rode Eternal Cup for trainer Steve Asmussen. Eternal Cup earned $30,000 for the win, which improved her record to 5 wins from 13 starts for earnings of $166,060. Earlier this meet, she won the $50,000 American Beauty Stakes.
